Writing Tips Concerning Analysis & Evaluation of Analytical Types of Essays

People’s curiosity helps them discover and observe the world around them: it is actually how they learn to interact and communicate with their surroundings. Babies frequently investigate how their toys work, they sometimes tear apart different details and put back together again. This simple action is an exercise of exploration and analysis.

In academic context, when you need to look through essay topics and come up with an analytical essay example, the purpose of writing such analysis essay example is to examine separate parts or aspects of the whole topic for interpretation or discussion. For example, in analytical writing, when evaluating and analyzing separate aspects of a book, movie or article, it becomes easier to find out how it works as a whole, what purpose it has, whether it is effective, etc. Analysis is conducted by asking questions. When it concerns an article, we may ask about the target audience, its primary message, and so on.

How to Write a Thesis Statement, Summary & Analysis: an Example Essay

The excerpt below and the thesis statement are derived from an analysis essay. The analysis revolves around Desiree, a Kate Chopin’s character from her short story “Desiree’s Baby.” In her thesis, the writer puts forward such argument: Despite the fact that Desiree in Chopin’s “Desiree’s Baby” highlights that dependence can prove to be an important constituent of healthy relationships, she still warns against the dangers of becoming overly dependent.

In a body paragraph of the essay, the writer suggests the following idea: Desiree’s dependence on her relationship started even before marriage, when she was brought up in Valmonde household. She was abandoned and was not able to care for herself at such a young age, so she became completely dependent on Valmonde.

Obviously, as Desiree was pampered in the household and worshipped as if she was a God’s gift, she did not have the need to fend for herself. Desiree relied on everyone around her for help and assistance since the early childhood: her caring adoptive parents, plantation owners, and slaves who were doing daily tasks at the plantation. According to Chopin, this environment mad Desiree beautiful, sincere, gentle, and affectionate.

Up to a specific point of time, such Desiree’s dependency proved to be beneficial to her. She turned into a beautiful woman both outside and inside. She is loved, and she brings happiness to the Valmonde household and in particular her adoptive parents. Being such a nice lady makes her a perfect match for Armand Aubigny, a wealthy man who is a plantation owner.

From this example, it is evident how the writer first appealed to dependence in relationships as one of the key themes of the story. The writer has also mentioned the name of the short story on purpose, thus pinpointing that the main theme will be analyzed through the main character.

Considering summary vs. analysis, although the writer includes some specific details of Desiree’s background, it cannot be equaled to the summary paragraph. As the very first sentence of the paragraph, the writer has provided a topic sentence that can be regarded as the paragraph’s thesis. Then the paragraph develops to link the facts of Desiree’s upbringing with the role that dependence had in her life. This is how the main essay argument was established.

Thus, if you find that you are merely recounting what the story or book is about, it means that the writer has provided a summary rather than analysis.
